Day 1 – Arrival in Polignano a Mare

Day 2 – Polignano a Mare to Castellana Grotte

Your first hiking stage takes you through the peaceful countryside of Puglia, surrounded by centuries-old olive groves. The highlight of the day is the extraordinary Castellana Caves, one of Italy’s most spectacular underground attractions.

Discovered in 1938, these caves offer an enchanting world of stalactites, stalagmites, and impressive caverns. Castellana Grotte is also part of the famous olive oil and wine route of the Murgia region.

Day 3 – Castellana Grotte to Alberobello

Leaving behind the underground wonders, you continue towards Alberobello, the world-famous town of the Trulli houses.

These unique dry-stone buildings are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and create a fairytale atmosphere unlike anywhere else. Wander through the charming alleys, perfect for photography lovers and culture seekers.

Day 4 – Alberobello to Locorotondo

• Terrain: gravel & paved roads

• Walking time: approx. 5.5 hours

Today’s route begins in Alberobello and crosses the small hamlet of Coreggia. Walking along the scenic Canale di Pirro and the Apulian Aqueduct trail, you’ll experience a changing landscape of oak forests, sinkholes, and natural oases.

In the second part of the hike, the countryside is dotted with trulli and stone paths, creating a timeless rural panorama.

Your destination is Locorotondo, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, famous for its whitewashed historic center and traditional cummerse houses.

Day 5 – Locorotondo to Martina Franca

• Elevation gain: 435 m

• Terrain: gravel & paved roads

• Walking time: approx. 4.5 hours

This stage leads you to elegant Martina Franca, renowned for its Baroque architecture and charming wrought-iron balconies.

The town’s landmark is the magnificent Basilica of San Martino, but the entire old town is a maze of beautiful streets, churches, and noble buildings.

Take time to explore at your own pace and enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of this cultural treasure in the Valle d’Itria.

Day 6 – Martina Franca to Crispiano

• Elevation gain: 374 m

• Terrain: gravel & paved roads

• Walking time: approx. 3 hours

A shorter hike today brings you to Crispiano, known as the “town of 100 masserie” (traditional fortified farms).

You will walk through the Bosco delle Pianelle, one of the largest and most important green areas in Puglia, rich in holm oaks and Mediterranean wildlife.

The route continues into the Natural Reserve of the Eastern Murge, reaching the stunning Masseria Amastuola, surrounded by a unique vineyard garden designed by landscape architect Fernando Caruncho.

Day 7 – Crispiano to Taranto

• Distance: 27 km

• Elevation gain: 10 m

• Terrain: gravel & paved roads

• Walking time: approx. 6 hours

Your final walking stage takes you to Taranto, the historic “City of Two Seas”, located between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo.

Founded as a Spartan colony in the 8th century BC, Taranto is rich in history, archaeological treasures, and breathtaking coastal views.

Don’t miss the MarTA – National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, one of the most important museums in Southern Italy.
